Last Minute Winter Wedding Finds

Inspiration, Wedding Fashion, Wedding PlanningWedding Creativo Photography

If you're looking for some last-minute touches for your winter wedding (or planning for next year) here are a few favorites we recently spotted on Etsy.com.  Check out the handmade silver rose drops, which you could sprinkle on the tables for a little extra winter romance.  Be sure to keep warm with a beautiful faux fur, knit, or wool shrug, shawl, caplet, or wrap of some sort.

Don't forget about your legs and feet under your dress, especially if you are going to brave the elements for some pictures outside. I think these leg warmers or spats would also be useful beyond the wedding day.

Wouldn't mistletoe make a great boutonniere for the groom?

Finally, there is something about the 40s-50s retro top hat snowman cake toppers that is just adorable.  But then again, you really can't go wrong with Mrs. and Mr. Abominable Snowman-Bigfoot.

How to Create a Wedding Budget

Wedding PlanningWedding Creativo Photography

By Sarah Toulouse

Planning a wedding budget is somewhat like buying a car, in that many people would love to own a Ferrari, but realistically everyone has to spend within their means.  Whether you can afford a luxury CL-Class Mercedes, middle-range Volkswagen Passat, or a base model Ford Fiesta, the right choice is going to be the best car (or rather wedding services/goods) that you can afford.

© kolixWith wedding budgeting it is all about prioritizing.  The trick is that your preferences for services may not be at the same level for each category.  So this is where you start -- by sitting down with your fiance and deciding what areas are most important to you both.   For example, you may want to go with Mercedes quality for catering, photography and the wedding dress, but for other services that are not high on your priority list you may decide that the Passat or Fiesta levels will work just fine.

There are dozens of online sites and even software to help you with budgeting, but below are links to several resources that we often recommend.

Since many of the online calculators assume you have some idea of costs (which is kind of a ridiculous assumption when you are just starting out), it is a good idea to start by researching some ball park figures for average wedding costs in your area.

Real Simple Weddings has listed fairly accurate average costs for each category.  You can search by your state, such as Illinois.   Their figures are based on research from another good website, Cost of Wedding.com.

Cost of Wedding aims to educate couples on the "real" costs of weddings and how to plan a budget.   They have a pretty good Wedding Cost Estimator  that has zip code and quality factors for you to select before it makes a calculation for you.

Another one we like a lot is the Party Pop Calculator.  It gives you the option to select each category by quality - basic, average, good, better, best - to have an idea of how the cost changes for different quality or experience levels for each type of vendor.   Be sure you first have your correct state selected at the top.

Additionally, for thorough walk-throughs on how to start planning your budget here are good articles on Brides, Elegala, and About.com

When you are ready to start with your own specific budget plan, there are many tools and resources available online.  Most sites require free registration, but some good ones are on WeddingWire and Martha Stewart Weddings.  Here is also a super cute Real Simple Weddings Budget Worksheet that you can download and print for your own planning notebook.

Finally, talk to friends and family about services they had for their weddings.  However, keep in mind that often the best vendors work towards improving and/or expanding their services each year, so prices and offerings may have changed since your friend or relative used any specific vendor.

Overall, remember you are doing all of this hard work now to plan the best wedding possible within your means, so you can relax and enjoy your wedding day......hopefully with the knowledge that afterwards you will not be paying for the debt of your celebration longer than you want or can afford.

Transformers 3...don't let the door hit ya on the way out!

Creativo News, Wedding Pictures, Wedding PlanningWedding Creativo Photography

Earlier this summer when Transformers 3 was filming in Chicago it was kind amusing for the the first few days in mid July.  Then it seemed like they would never leave the city as major street closures and filming detours continued though the beginning of September!  And the city allowing them to shut down during peak traffic times on major commuter streets, like they did on Wacker Drive....at 5pm....on a Friday!?!?  Come on, really?!?!  Even though it was cool that we actually got to "crash" the set during one of our weddings, during the weeks that followed it was not so much fun when it seemed like we were being shadowed by the production crew, which made wedding day travel more difficult than usual.   (We were sorry to hear what ultimately caused them to wrap "early" and hope the woman who got injured on the set gets better soon.) For all of the trouble it caused, it better be the best summer blockbuster movie ever.

Anyway, it was a good reminder to always check the City of Chicago's Transportation page a few days before your wedding for any unexpected closures around your venues.

Glorious Cakes + support for Cakegirls

Inspiration, Wedding Ideas, Wedding Pictures, Wedding PlanningWedding Creativo Photography

We were saddened to hear about the fire that destroyed Chicago's Cakegirls bakery.  While they are working on rebuilding their business, supporters can purchase t-shirts to help Cakegirls employees.  We wish them a speedy and successful recovery.

Wedding cakes are indeed works of art.  From elaborate to understated, they are not only lovely centerpieces for the reception, but they also represent the style and personalities of each couple.  Giorgio is always teasing me that I take 5000 pictures of the cakes at weddings, but I can't help it.  I'm always in awe of the beauty and craftsmanship that goes into these sweet wonders.  In honor of all cake makers, here are highlights from some of our recent weddings. The first picture is an amazing golf bag cake made by Cakegirls for a couple of avid golfers who had an elegant golf-themed reception.  Feast your eyes!

Farms, Barns and Winery Weddings

Destination Weddings, Wedding Ideas, Wedding PlanningWedding Creativo Photography

We've been asked a few times lately about rural places for weddings such as barns, farms and vineyards. They can be lovely alternatives to traditional venues and you might even consider making near-destination weddings down-state or to neighbor states for a fun getaway weekend for your guests. They also generally make for a relaxed day, especially when ceremony and reception are both held at the venue and guests need not travel to any additional locations in these usually unfamiliar countryside areas.

Here are suggestions in the region closest to Chicago area:

Lynfred Winery (Roselle, IL)

Whyte Horse Winery (Monticello, IN)

County Line Orchard (Hobart, IN)

Hoosier Grove Barn (Streamwood, IL)

Vehe Barn (Deer Park, IL)

Danada House - horse stables (Wheaton, IL)

Millcreek and Blue Dress Barns (Southwest Michigan)

There are a lot more vineyards that have weddings in areas throughout the region in southern IL & IN and northern MI, so if you are open to having a near-destination wedding these would be good to look into as well.

Chateau Pomije (Guilford, IN)

Chateau de Pique (Seymour, IN)

Spirit Knob Winery (Ursa, IL)

Ravissant Winery (Belleville, IL)

Gill's Pier Vineyard & Winery (Leelanau Peninsula, MI)

Black Star Winery and Farms (Suttons Bay/Leelanau, MI)

Michigan's lakeshore and Traverse City area is loaded with wineries - certainly make for a great weekend getaways for newlyweds too!

Le Birdcage

Wedding Fashion, Wedding Ideas, Wedding PlanningWedding Creativo Photography

We absolutely adore the revival of the birdcage hat, which is a great modern-vintage swap for the traditional veil, plus it can qualify for your "something old"....even if it isn't. There are tons of hand-crafted ones available on Etsy.
